Wedding Venue Review: The Barn Brasserie

Paper saying ‘The Barn’ surrounded by wedding flowers and rings.

A lovingly restored, traditional Essex barn

The Barn Brasserie in Colchester is a stunning Grade II listed, 16th-century farm building, transformed into a top-quality restaurant with historic character. As one of the largest thatched barns in England, it offers a unique setting for your wedding day. Renowned for its flawless service and picturesque surroundings, The Barn Brasserie provides an unforgettable backdrop for your wedding celebrations.

In this review, we'll delve into what makes this venue so special, sharing insights from a wedding photographer's perspective to help you decide if it's the right place for your big day.

Where you say I Do

The Barn Brasserie's ceremony area offers an elegant and intimate setting on the upstairs balcony. With space for about 20 guests, it's perfect for a small, close-knit ceremony. Although there is an option for additional guests to watch from below in the restaurant area, this setup isn't ideal for everyone. The space lacks natural light, so we use flash photography to ensure our signature bright and professional-quality images.

The Grounds

The grounds of The Barn Brasserie provide a charming setting for your wedding day. The courtyard is perfect for a drinks reception, offering an astounding, romantic atmosphere in a serene country retreat away from busy towns. While the grounds aren’t extensive, there’s ample space for portraits. With a bit of photographer’s magic, we can even create beautiful photos in unexpected spots, like the car park (as pictured above)!

Dancing the night away

Your wedding breakfast at The Barn Brasserie takes place in the main restaurant, a large and sophisticated space that can accommodate many guests. You’ll be treated to a top-quality, award-winning meal. As with many old buildings, natural light is limited, so we use flash photography to ensure your photos remain clean and crisp. This does make it slightly more difficult to stay under the radar.

When you're ready to get the party started, the spacious bar area converts into a dance floor. This area benefits from large double-height windows that let in plenty of natural light, giving it a bright, open feel. For a classic party atmosphere with disco lights, the ambiance can be effected.

5 Stars!

We recommend the Barn Brasserie for couples who wish to make lasting memories of their wedding. The services offered make guests feel welcome and the meals served are exquisite. The venue is very accommodating and there is flexibility in how you use the space – choose their all-inclusive package for stress-free planning or be more involved and book it only for your wedding breakfast. Another important bonus is the large car park for you and your guests to use free of charge.

The ideal venue if you’re looking for:

  • Barn wedding

  • Exceptional food

  • A countryside location
